Glossary of terms

For those who work with or encounter energetic materials in their work, there are many terms that are useful to know. Here we have listed some of the most basic ones.  
Words we often use
Safety and security
Safety is about preventing injuries, accidents and risks to people in their work. In Swedish, we can translate it into several different terms depending on the context. For example, workplace safety, occupational safety, protective equipment, safety procedures and accident prevention.
Security
Security is about the safety of your business against external threats such as unauthorized access, sabotage, theft and espionage. In Swedish, we can translate it to external security or operational protection.
Energetic materials
Energetic materials are products that can decompose without the help of oxygen in the air, but can also be other energy-rich products. An example of energetic materials is explosives.
  • Common terms used in the sector
    Detonation
    Detonation is a type of explosion in which explosives deflagrate (burn) at an extremely high reaction rate and the combustion front is faster than the speed of sound. Detonation is the desired course of events for explosives intended to break up rock, for example.
    Deflagration
    Deflagration is a type of combustion in which the combustion front spreads at a speed lower than the speed of sound. Deflagration is the desired process in rocket engines, for example.
    Explosives
    Explosives are explosive substances and mixtures, explosive articles, and substances, mixtures and articles manufactured with the intention of producing an effect by explosion or pyrotechnic effect. Explosives, detonators, ammunition, gunpowder and pyrotechnic articles are some examples of explosives.
    Dangerous goods
    Dangerous goods is a collective term for substances and objects that can pose a risk to people, the environment or property if not handled properly during transportation. Dangerous goods are divided into nine different classes based on their hazardous properties, with explosive substances and articles being one of the classifications.
    Civil explosives products
    Civil explosives are explosives used for civilian purposes. Examples include explosives used in mining, quarrying, or rocket and smoke signals used in shipping and emergency services.
    Military explosives products
    Military explosives are explosives manufactured for and used by defense forces. They can be, for example, ammunition or explosives for military purposes. Military explosives require high security in handling and storage.
